Here are some some pointers on how to land that hospitality job you have always wanted from one of our trainers – an experienced manager in the Hospitality industry…

Having managed hospitality venues and hired staff for many years I have formed strong views on the types of people I will hire and those who just don’t quite make the grade.

On average you have only 7 seconds to make a favourable first impression. Planning that moment can be the difference between success and failure, so plan for success.

Here are my top 5 tips on landing that great job:

1. Hospitality is all about personality. People are investing their leisure time to come to your venue to enjoy themselves. From the moment you walk in the door of the venue you would like to work in bring your “A” game. Smile at the patrons, smile at the staff and show that outgoing, happy personality that you will bring to the job.
2. Target your venue. By this I mean find the type of places that you really want to work for, where you feel passionate about. Make it known to the staff that you would really like to be part of their team. You don’t want to appear as if any job will do. I am always impressed by a person who knows what they want and want to be part of my team.
3. Don’t rely only on advertised jobs. Visit venues where you would like to work and make it known. It is amazing how often a job can be created for the right person. It is easier to impress in person than by a resume.
4. Offer to do some shifts for free. It is an investment in your future. Especially if there is no job immediately available. By volunteering you will get a chance to stand out as the next person they will want to hire.
5. Lastly, but just as important as my other tips, set yourself apart from your competition. The first 4 tips will help you do that. Add to these a qualification at Certificate III level or above and you are now a stand out candidate. Employers love staff who will go the extra mile. Taking your learning and development into your own hands is the perfect way to demonstrate you have this attribute and you possess skills that they need.

These are my top 5 tips, if you follow every one of them I’m sure you will be serving customers in your favourite venues in no time.
